Michael Bolton’s decades of influence in both the diving and shark conservation communities are as rich with history as they are entertaining. Bolton’s love for the water began in the 1960’s at the age of 17. His honorable time spent serving in the United States Air Force eventually found him stationed in Panama, where the opportunity to dive was amplified by the isthmus’s positioning between both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
After his retirement from the Air Force, Bolton was launched into stardom after a meteoric rise to the top of the competitive spearfishing world, representing the country of Panama in the late 60’s and early 70’s during multiple international tournaments. It was then that Michael, known then as “the silent hunter”, was asked to assist in constructing a sport fishing club on Coiba Island, one of Panama’s remote islands off the Pacific. Bolton spent almost two years residing on the island, and during that time drifted away from spearfishing, only to find new passion in underwater photography and videography. It was at that time Bolton’s love and obsession with sharks was solidified, and the fire for capturing wildlife encounters through his lens was breathed into life. “Using the old Nikon Nikonos 1 & ll, 35m still cameras and a Kodak K100 16mm movie camera with a Al Giddings Underwater housing, I fell into the passion of taking pictures and videos. It was a challenge in those days as it was only film shooting with the old Ektachrome 64 and 100. I was capturing the videos and pictures as best as I could, and then I’d take them to develop and hopefully come out with something worth looking at at. During the next few years I had the opportunity to work with ABC’s Wild World of Sports, filming underwater action shots of sailfish marlin and game fish. It was not a full time gig, it was only when they would come to Panama for these episodes and look me up for the job. I did this as a hobby, not as a profession. I had my full time job so I was only able to do this on my spare time.”
Bolton’s professional years were spent as an industry leading salvage and treasure expert who’s resume expands beyond the recovery of almost half a dozen Spanish shipwrecks. Michael Bolton’s contribution to the recovery of ocean floor’s history cannot be overstated. His detailed historical reference, precise planning, and execution in the most challenging conditions has been hailed around the world. After pioneering recovery and salvage operations for almost 3 decades, Bolton announced his retirement in 2008, and devoted his full time and effort into marine wildlife conservation.
Michael is one of only few divers in the world to have shared the water with Great White sharks outside of the confines of a cage.
“Those moments have been some of the highlights of my life. Great Whites are very curious animals, and even though they knows their size and power, they are also very cautious, intelligent, and have extraordinary eye sight. The Great White doesn’t just run in and attack a prey at the first site. It studies and analyzes what could be a prey by making several circles and assessing the situation before an attack. So, 99% of the time around humans, the Great White is just surveying the situation by circling around until it eventually realizes that we are not its prey. Again, knowledge and understand of sharks behavior is always the best defense with them.”
Although for many diving outside of a cage with a Great White is almost unimaginable, Bolton maintains that for getting good camera shots, it is much better from inside the cage. From here (inside of the cage), they are much more active, instead of curious and cautious when diving outside of it.
Bolton’s decades of expertise and in-water knowledge have solidified him as a top expeditary leader. This pioneer has paved a path for future generations of ocean enthusiasts to passionately pursue a course of life changing experiences. Capturing these vibrant moments help to shape and direct our society towards a path of increased oceanic conservation and education.
